How to Build a Full-Stack AI App with the Supabase Backend

September 9, 2026

Building a production AI app means more than calling a model — you need a database, user accounts, APIs, and storage. Supabase bundles all of that into an open-source backend built on Postgres, so you can build a full-stack AI app without wiring a dozen services. This guide walks through setting up the data and auth layer for an AI product.

What Supabase Gives You

Supabase provides a managed Postgres database, authentication, file storage, and edge functions behind one SDK. For an AI app you typically store user profiles, conversation history, and settings in tables, keep uploaded files in storage, and enforce access with Row Level Security. Because it uses real SQL, you also get the pgvector extension to store embedding vectors for semantic search.

Step 1: Create a Project and Define Your Schema

Sign up at Supabase and create a new project. Open the SQL editor and define the tables your app needs — for example a conversations table and a messages table. Keep foreign keys clear so you can join data later. Start with a schema that matches your features, because changing it later in Postgres is easier than in a NoSQL store but still costs effort.

Step 2: Enable Authentication

Turn on the providers you need in the Authentication settings, such as email and password or social logins. The Supabase client handles sign-up, login, and session tokens for you. Attach the authenticated user’s ID to the rows they create, which makes scoping queries to a single user straightforward and sets you up for secure multi-tenancy.

Step 3: Store AI Data and Files

Use storage buckets to hold uploaded documents and images, and capture their public references in your tables. For RAG features, enable the pgvector extension and add a column to store embeddings alongside each document chunk. Supabase lets you run a similarity search in SQL, which keeps your vector store close to your application data.

Step 4: Enforce Access With Row Level Security

Never expose your whole database to the internet. Write Row Level Security policies so users can only read and write their own rows. For example, add a policy that a user can only select messages where the user id equals `auth.uid()`. This is the single most important step for a safe multi-user AI app, and Supabase makes it easy to test policies page by page.

Step 5: Add Serverless Logic With Edge Functions

Keep secrets and heavy work out of the browser. Write a Supabase Edge Function that calls your language model with a user’s stored context, then writes the reply into the messages table. Your frontend calls this function instead of talking to the model directly. This also lets you apply rate limiting and log usage in one place.

Best Practices for AI Apps on Supabase

Treat every client request as untrusted and rely on policies rather than hiding data in the frontend. Index the columns you query on, including any embedding column you search. Keep your model calls in Edge Functions so costs and errors stay observable. Finally, migrate your schema with versioned SQL files so your team can reproduce the backend in any environment.
