Amazon Kiro Freemium

Spec-driven AI IDE that turns plain-language requirements into working code

Amazon Kiro is an AI coding IDE from AWS that writes a spec and task list before touching code, then an agent implements it. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, has a free tier, and paid plans start at $19/month.

What is Amazon Kiro?

Kiro is Amazon’s answer to Cursor and Windsurf, but built around one opinion: you should agree on what you’re building before an agent writes a single line. The IDE looks like a fork of VS Code, so extensions and keybindings mostly carry over.

The difference shows up in the workflow. Instead of dumping a prompt into a chat box, you describe a feature and Kiro drafts a requirements.md, a design.md, and a tasks.md you can edit. Agents then pick up those tasks and open pull requests against them.

Product Features

  • Spec generation — turns a paragraph into structured requirements with acceptance criteria, in EARS-style formatting.
  • Autonomous agents — run implementation tasks in the background and report back with diffs.
  • Hook system — trigger actions on file save or agent completion, e.g. auto-run tests or update docs.
  • Steering files — persistent project rules the agent reads on every task, so conventions stick.
  • VS Code base — the standard extension marketplace and debugging UI.
  • Model choice — routes between Amazon Nova and Anthropic Claude models depending on task.

Product Highlights

The spec-first loop is genuinely useful on greenfield projects. You catch scope problems on page one instead of after 400 lines of agent code. Hook support is the sleeper feature: wiring “on task complete, run pytest” removes a manual step most agent tools still leave to you.

On tiny edits it’s overkill. Asking Kiro to rename a variable means waiting for spec scaffolding you didn’t want. For quick one-file fixes, plain autocomplete in VS Code is faster.

Use Cases

  • Shipping a new API endpoint with tests and docs from one written spec.
  • Onboarding onto a legacy repo by generating design notes from existing code.
  • Turning a product ticket into an editable task list before any code is written.
  • Enforcing team style rules through steering files across every agent run.
  • Prototyping a small service over a weekend with minimal supervision.

Quick Summary

  • Amazon Kiro is a spec-driven AI IDE from AWS, with a free tier and paid plans from $19/month.
  • It writes requirements, design and task files before its agent writes code.
  • Best for greenfield features and teams that want reviewable plans; weak for one-line edits.
  • Steering files and hooks carry your project conventions into every agent run.
