Project management platform with ClickUp Brain AI for summaries, task drafting and field autofill

ClickUp is a work-management platform whose AI layer, ClickUp Brain, writes task descriptions, summarizes threads and answers questions across your workspace. Brain is bundled on paid plans starting around $7 per user per month, with a monthly AI credit cap.

What is ClickUp?

ClickUp, Inc. launched in 2017 and positions itself as one app to replace scattered project tools — tasks, docs, whiteboards, goals, dashboards and chat in one workspace. The AI layer is called Brain, and it came out of the 2023 wave of “AI inside the tool” features.

Worth being clear about what Brain is. It is not a chatbot you go to. It is a button and a command bar inside existing views: you right-click a task and ask for a summary, you type /ask in the command line, you set an AI Field on a custom field. The AI is plumbing, not the product.

What does ClickUp Brain actually do?

Four things cover most of the real usage. First, summarization — it reads a task’s comment thread and the linked docs and gives you 3 bullets. If you have ever scrolled 60 comments to find one decision, this earns its money.

Second, drafting. Brain writes task descriptions from a title, expands a one-liner into acceptance criteria, and turns a meeting note into subtasks. Third, AI Fields: a custom field type that runs a prompt on the row and stores the answer, so it re-evaluates when the row changes. Fourth, Brain MAX and Custom Agents — agents you define with instructions and tools that can act on tasks without a human triggering each step.

Agents are the ambitious piece and also the shakiest. In practice they work well on narrow, repetitive workflows (assignee routing, ticket triage, weekly status rollups) and badly on anything requiring judgment about scope creep.

ClickUp pricing and the AI credit cap

PlanPriceAI access
Free Forever$0100MB storage, very limited AI
Unlimited~$7/user/moBrain included, monthly credit cap
Business~$12/user/moHigher AI caps, AI Fields, more automations
EnterpriseQuoteBrain MAX, SSO, advanced permissions

The credit model is where people get burned. AI usage draws from a workspace-wide credit pool tied to your plan, and heavy users can exhaust it while light users leave credits unused. There is no per-seat fairness. A support team hammering summaries will starve the design team.

Annual billing cuts the price roughly 20%. The gap between Unlimited and Business is worth the $5 only if you need AI Fields and more automation runs.

Where ClickUp gets in its own way

Setup time. ClickUp is famously configurable, which means someone has to configure it. Custom statuses, views, hierarchies of Spaces and Folders — a mid-size team can lose two weeks to this, and Brain does not help you design your own workspace structure.

Performance has improved since 2022 but the web app still feels heavier than Linear or Asana on large workspaces (10,000+ tasks). And the free plan’s 100MB storage is a rounding error if you attach any files at all.

Who is ClickUp Brain for?

It fits teams already committed to one tool for everything — agencies, ops-heavy startups, internal project groups where the ticket thread is the source of truth. If your team lives in the task list, Brain’s summaries save real minutes.

It is wrong for you if your team is small and already happy in Linear, or if you want AI that writes the deliverables rather than organizes them. For document-first work, look at Notion AI instead.

Use cases

  • Weekly status rollups pulled from task threads instead of asking five people
  • Turning a client call transcript into assigned subtasks with due dates
  • AI Fields scoring inbound requests by urgency before triage
  • Support ticket summaries pasted into the customer’s record
  • Marketing campaign tracking with goals and dashboards in the same workspace

Quick Summary

  • ClickUp Brain is an AI layer inside ClickUp’s workspace, not a separate chatbot product.
  • Brain ships on paid plans from roughly $7 per user per month, with a shared monthly AI credit cap.
  • Best AI use is summarization and task drafting; custom agents need narrow, well-defined scopes.
  • The real cost is setup: configuring spaces and statuses takes days, and AI does not do that for you.
  • Pick it for all-in-one work management. Skip it if you already standardised on Linear or Asana.
