Sentry Freemium
Error and performance monitoring that ties every stack trace to a release.
Sentry is an application monitoring platform that captures exceptions, slow database queries and broken front-end sessions, then groups them so engineers see one issue instead of 40,000 raw events. The Developer plan is free; Team starts at $26/month.
What is Sentry?
The project began in 2008 as an open-source Django error logger, and the hosted service plus self-hosted edition still share that SDK-first design. You install an SDK — Python, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, PHP, .NET, Android, iOS or one of about 100 integrations — and the first event rarely takes more than ten lines of config.
What separates Sentry from a log aggregator is the release link. Every event maps to a commit, so a stack trace shows which deploy introduced the bug.
Product Features
- Stack trace grouping with in-app vs library frame separation and source context.
- Distributed tracing: transaction spans across services by sampling rate, typically 10-20% in production.
- Session Replay for browser sessions, with DOM text masked by default.
- Cron monitors alert when a scheduled job silently stops running.
- Release health shows crash-free session and user percentages per version, which doubles as a rollback signal.
- Alert routing to Slack, PagerDuty, Opsgenie, Teams, or webhooks with per-issue ownership rules.
Product Highlights
- The free Developer tier includes 5,000 errors and 50 replays a month, which covers a small side project comfortably.
- Quota is billed per event, and noisy SDK configs can burn it. Without
beforeSendfilters and a sensible sample rate, a single retry loop has been known to exhaust a monthly allowance. - Self-hosting is possible under the Functional Source License but needs real ops effort: Postgres, Kafka, ClickHouse, Redis and more containers.
- The UI has improved a lot since 2023, though first-time exploration of traces still takes a few clicks too many.
Who is Sentry for?
Any team shipping to production that currently learns about errors from user emails. It is also the sane default for solo developers who want one dashboard instead of Datadog’s pricing page.
Skip it if you mostly need infrastructure metrics and log search at petabyte scale. Sentry focuses on the request, not the host.
Pricing in 2026
Sentry bills on events, not seats. Developer is $0 with 5,000 errors and 50 replays monthly. Team is $26/month including 50,000 errors, 1GB attachments and 10-hour trace retention, with additional event tiers at roughly $26 per 50,000. Business adds SSO and advanced quotas from $80/month. You can set a hard spend cap in billing settings.
Use Cases
- Catching a JavaScript exception that only fires on one Android browser version, with device and OS context attached.
- Confirming whether a 4-second API response comes from your code or an overloaded database call.
- Watching a nightly ETL cron that fails silently three times a week.
- Comparing crash-free sessions before and after a risky release, then deciding whether to roll back.
- Replaying a user’s session to see the exact click path that triggered a checkout error.
Quick Summary
- Sentry is an error and performance monitoring platform with SDKs for 100+ frameworks; the Developer tier is free at 5,000 errors per month.
- Its differentiator is release-linked stack traces that show which deploy broke production.
- The Team plan costs $26/month for 50,000 errors and 1GB of attachments, billed on events rather than seats.
- Best for production web and mobile apps; not a substitute for infrastructure-level metrics or log search at scale.
