How to Use Claude Sonnet 4.5 in Your Coding Agent
Claude Sonnet 4.5 is a balanced coding model. Learn how to wire it into an agent, set token budgets, and when to pick it over…
Anthropic's fastest small model, built for cheap high-volume agent work
Claude Haiku 4.5 is Anthropic’s smallest and fastest current model. It costs about $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens โ roughly a third of Sonnet 4.5 โ and is built for agent loops and bulk tasks where speed matters more than deep reasoning.
Haiku is the third tier in Anthropic’s Claude lineup, below Sonnet and Opus. The 4.5 release closed much of the gap that used to exist: Anthropic claims it matches older Sonnet models on coding and agentic benchmarks while running several times faster. It sits in Claude.ai for free users, in Claude Code, and via the API under the model name claude-haiku-4-5.
Haiku 4.5 makes multi-step agents affordable. A pipeline that calls a model 30 times per request is suddenly viable when the model costs a dollar per million tokens instead of five or fifteen. It is also a sensible default for classification, extraction and routing tasks you would never waste Opus on.
Caveats: it still loses to Opus on long, tangled reasoning. Give it a 500-line refactor or a subtle legal question and the small model shows its size. Use it for the cheap 90 percent of steps, escalate the hard ones.
Right for developers running agent fleets, startups watching API bills, and anyone doing bulk text processing. Wrong choice as your only model if your work is heavy reasoning or careful writing.
