Claude Skills are folder-based instruction packs that teach Claude repeatable workflows
Claude Skills are folders containing a SKILL.md instruction file plus optional scripts and assets. Released by Anthropic in October 2025, they load on demand so Claude can follow your exact process — no fine-tuning, no giant system prompt.
What are Claude Skills?
A Skill is a directory with a SKILL.md file at the root. The file has YAML frontmatter with a name and description, then plain Markdown instructions. Claude reads the description first, and only pulls in full instructions when the task matches. That progressive loading is the whole point: you can register dozens of Skills without bloating every request.
Skills can also bundle code — Python scripts, templates, reference documents — that Claude runs or reads in a sandboxed environment.

How Much Do Claude Skills Cost?
Skills themselves are free to write and install. You pay for the model calls they trigger, billed at normal Claude rates. Claude Pro is $20 a month and Team runs $25-30 per user, with API usage metered per token. Building a Skill costs nothing but your time; the risk is a badly written Skill that quietly burns tokens on every relevant request.

Who Should Use Claude Skills and Who Should Not
Great fit for teams repeating the same structured tasks, and for anyone who’s been maintaining a 3,000-word custom prompt. The folder format is refreshingly simple compared to framework-heavy alternatives like LangChain.
Skip it if you’re not on Claude. Skills are Anthropic-specific — they won’t run in ChatGPT or Gemini, so any investment is a lock-in decision. There’s also no central registry with versioning and signing yet, which means distributing Skills across a large org is still manual file copying.
One practical gotcha: the description field is the trigger. Write it vaguely and Claude will load your Skill at odd moments or never.
