Grok Studio Freemium

xAI's split-screen canvas where Grok writes and runs code beside your prompt

Grok Studio is a canvas workspace inside Grok where a document, code file or HTML preview opens in a right-hand panel and can be executed directly. It launched for all Grok users in April 2026, including the free tier, and runs Python and browser-side HTML/JS in a sandbox.

What is Grok Studio?

If you have used ChatGPT’s Canvas or Claude’s Artifacts, the shape is familiar. You ask Grok something, and instead of a wall of chat text it writes into a persistent side panel you can edit yourself. Grok Studio is xAI’s version, tied to the same Grok models (Grok 4 and 4.1 at the time of writing) that power the chat.

Two modes matter in practice. Code mode runs Python server-side in a sandboxed container and returns output. Preview mode renders HTML, CSS and JavaScript in an iframe so you can see a small web page or game live. Google Drive files can be pulled in as source material, which is handy for turning a spreadsheet into a chart.

Grok Studio Features

  • Split-pane canvas — chat on the left, editable artifact on the right.
  • Python execution in a sandbox, with pip installs for common packages.
  • HTML/CSS/JS preview rendered live in the panel.
  • Google Drive import for docs, sheets and slides as context.
  • Version history so you can roll a canvas back to an earlier revision.
  • Shareable output — export or publish the finished file.

Product Highlights

The free access is the differentiator. ChatGPT’s Canvas and Claude’s Artifacts are gated by paid plans in several regions; Grok Studio is available to free X accounts, which makes it the cheapest way to try a real coding canvas.

The sandbox is limited. Python runs but heavy native libraries, long jobs and anything needing a GPU will not work. It is a scratchpad, not a Colab replacement.

SuperGrok runs $30/month and lifts message caps and gives access to the newest models first. If you hit rate limits on the free tier during a long coding session, that is the upgrade path.

Who Should Use Grok Studio?

It suits people who learn by poking at code — students, analysts doing quick data work, hobbyists building a tiny game. It does not suit professional software teams: no Git, no real project files, and the sandbox cannot reach your local machine.

Grok Studio Use Cases

  • Prototyping an HTML/CSS layout and previewing it instantly.
  • Running a quick pandas analysis on pasted CSV data.
  • Building a small browser game and iterating on the canvas.
  • Drafting a document while asking Grok for edits in the same view.
  • Turning a Google Sheet into a chart without leaving the chat.

Quick Summary

  • Grok Studio is a canvas workspace inside Grok, not a separate app.
  • It runs Python and previews HTML/JS in a sandboxed panel.
  • Available on the free Grok tier; SuperGrok is $30/month.
  • Good for prototypes and quick data scripts, weak for real projects.
  • Google Drive import makes it useful for spreadsheet-to-chart work.
