Offline-first AI coding assistant that runs a local model so your source code never leaves the machine

Pineapple AI is an open-source AI coding assistant that runs its model locally and works offline, so proprietary source code never leaves your laptop. It is built for regulated and air-gapped environments first, and for everyone else second.

What is Pineapple AI?

Pineapple AI ships as a desktop app plus editor extensions for VS Code and JetBrains. Under the hood it bundles a quantized coding model (the default download is around 4 GB) and exposes chat, inline completion, and repo-wide question answering. Because inference happens on-device, latency depends on your GPU and there is no usage meter.

It started as a solo-developer project in 2024 and now gets most of its attention from banks, defense contractors, and health-tech companies that cannot send code to a third party.

Product Features

  • Local inference with optional GPU acceleration; on an M2 MacBook Pro, first-token latency for chat sat around 1.2 seconds in our test.
  • Air-gap support with a documented offline install bundle and no telemetry calls by default.
  • Repo indexing that builds a local embedding store; a 200k-line TypeScript monorepo indexed in roughly 9 minutes.
  • Model swapping between bundled, GGUF-based, and self-hosted OpenAI-compatible endpoints.
  • Privacy dashboard showing every outbound network call, with all of them switchable off.

Product Highlights

The privacy story is real, not marketing. We ran it with the network interface disabled and completions kept working. That is not true of most tools that claim offline mode.

Quality is the trade. On multi-file refactors the local model produced more hallucinated function names than Claude Sonnet or GPT-5 class models. For boilerplate, tests, and explaining unfamiliar code it held up fine.

Hardware matters more than the app. On an 8 GB laptop it stutters badly. Treat 16 GB RAM and a discrete GPU as the practical floor.

Use Cases

  • Developers at banks and healthcare firms under code-egress restrictions.
  • Contractors working on client code covered by an NDA that bans cloud AI.
  • Offline work on planes, trains, or in secure facilities.
  • Teams that want a second, no-API-cost assistant for routine edits.
  • Open-source contributors who prefer a tool they can inspect and patch.

Is Pineapple AI free?

The core app is free and open source. A Pro tier at about $10 per month adds a larger bundled model and priority downloads. Since inference runs locally, there is no token bill regardless of plan.

Skip it if you want the strongest model available and have no privacy constraint; a cloud assistant will out-write it. Pick it if code egress is a blocker, or if you want a coding copilot that cannot rate-limit you.

Quick Summary

  • Pineapple AI is an open-source coding assistant that runs entirely on your machine, with no per-token cost.
  • The free core works offline; a Pro tier around $10 per month adds bigger models.
  • It indexes a 200k-line repo in about 9 minutes and supports VS Code and JetBrains.
  • Best for regulated environments and NDA-bound contract work.
  • Weaker than cloud models on complex multi-file refactors, and heavy on RAM.
