AI voice generator with 900+ voices and instant voice cloning for podcasts and courses
Play.ht is a text-to-speech service with 900+ AI voices, instant voice cloning from a short sample, and a REST API that returns audio files plus word-level timestamps. Free tier gives 12,500 characters; paid plans start around $39 per month for commercial use.
Play.ht started as a browser-based audio article reader in 2016 and moved into full voice synthesis. It’s now owned by the same group as Podcastle and shares infrastructure with it. The core product is simple: paste text, pick a voice, export MP3 or WAV.
What sets it apart from generic TTS is the timestamp output. If you’re building a read-along app or auto-subtitling a video, getting per-word timings from the same API call saves a second transcription step.
Partly. The free plan allows 12,500 characters per month with non-commercial rights and Play.ht branding on embeds. That’s about 20 minutes of speech. Creator runs $39/month for 200,000 characters and commercial rights; Unlimited is $99/month but throttles to slower generation queues during peak hours.
Pay per character on the API instead if volume is spiky — roughly $0.004 per 1,000 characters on the higher tiers.
Emotional range is the weak spot. Long-form narration drifts into a flat cadence after a few minutes, and exclamation points don’t reliably produce excitement. For a 40-minute audiobook chapter, ElevenLabs still sounds more human, at roughly double the price. Play.ht wins when you need many voices quickly and cheaply.
