Stability AI Freemium

Stability AI builds the open image models behind Stable Diffusion and charges for hosted access.

Stability AI is the UK company that develops the Stable Diffusion image models. You can download the weights for free and run them locally, or pay for hosted access through its API and DreamStudio app.

What is Stability AI?

Stability AI is a London-based AI company founded in 2019 and best known for releasing Stable Diffusion 1.5 in 2022, which kicked off the open-source image generation wave. Its current flagship text-to-image family is Stable Diffusion 3.5, available in Large (8B), Medium (2.5B) and a small variant. It also ships Stable Video Diffusion, Stable Audio and Stable LM for text.

The business model is unusual: the model weights are downloadable under the Stability AI Community License, which is free for research and for companies under $1M annual revenue, while commercial use beyond that requires an enterprise license. Hosted API usage is billed per credit.

Product Features

  • Stable Diffusion 3.5 Large / Medium — text-to-image with improved prompt adherence and multi-subject handling.
  • Open weights — download and run locally on your own GPU with no per-image cost.
  • Image editing suite — inpainting, outpainting, upscaling and structure control via the API.
  • Stable Video Diffusion — short image-to-video clips, mainly useful for research.
  • Stable Audio — music and sound effect generation up to around 3 minutes.
  • DreamStudio — a browser front-end with credit-based pricing for people who don’t want to set up a local stack.

Product Highlights

  • Free self-hosting is the real draw — once you own a GPU, marginal image cost is zero.
  • Broad fine-tune ecosystem: LoRAs, ControlNet and ComfyUI nodes are built around these checkpoints.
  • Licensing is the catch. The Community License is generous but not unlimited, and the fine print matters for agencies.
  • Text rendering inside images is weaker than newer closed models like Imagen or GPT Image.

Who is Stability AI for?

It fits developers who want to own their pipeline and avoid per-image bills, plus researchers who need weights they can modify. It is a poor fit for someone who wants a point-and-click app with strong text rendering and no hardware — for that, a hosted model is less friction. The 8B Large model also wants a lot of VRAM; a 12GB card will fight you.

Use Cases

  • Building an internal asset generator with zero per-image cost.
  • Training a brand-specific LoRA on product photos.
  • Batch-generating concept art for games without API limits.
  • Adding inpainting and upscaling into an existing editing app.
  • Prototyping video and audio models in an academic setting.

Quick Summary

  • Stability AI makes Stable Diffusion 3.5 and related open-weight models.
  • Weights are free to download; hosted API access is credit-based.
  • Commercial use is free below $1M revenue, then requires a license.
  • Best for developers who can self-host and want to avoid per-image fees.
  • Weakest on in-image text compared with closed frontier models.
