How to Set Up a RAG Pipeline with Jina AI Embeddings and Rerankers
Retrieval-augmented generation helps large language models answer with your own data instead of guessing, and Jina AI provides the embedding and reranking models that make this practical. In this guide you will learn how to set up a RAG pipeline using Jina AI embeddings, the Reader API, and a reranker so your chatbot returns grounded, accurate answers over real documents.
Why Jina AI for RAG
Good retrieval starts with good embeddings. If two passages are similar in meaning, their vectors should be close together. Jina AI offers multilingual embedding models tuned for search, plus a reranker that re-scores the top results for precision. Putting embeddings, a vector store, and a reranker together is how you build a pipeline that scales.
Step 1: Generate Embeddings for Your Documents
Load your documents, split them into passages, and call the Jina AI embeddings API to turn each passage into a vector. The Reader API helps here too: if your source is a URL, it converts messy web content into clean text you can chunk. Keep chunks under a few hundred tokens so each vector captures one focused idea.
Step 2: Store Vectors in a Vector Database
Write the embeddings into any vector store you like. Many teams use a familiar persistence layer that supports vector indexing so they can query nearest neighbors by semantic meaning. The exact store matters less than naming your documents and vectors clearly, because you will need to map a matched vector back to its source text for citations.
Step 3: Retrieve the Top Candidate Passages
When a user asks a question, embed the query with the same Jina AI model you used for documents. Then run a similarity search to pull back the nearest passages, for example the top twenty. This is your candidate shortlist: broad enough to avoid missing the answer, small enough to stay fast and cheap.
Step 4: Rerank to Sharpen the Results
Embedding search is fast but not perfectly precise, which is why you add a reranking stage. Send your shortlist and the user’s question to the Jina AI reranker, which scores each passage in light of the actual query. Keep only the top three to five passages. This single step dramatically improves answer quality while keeping costs low.
Step 5: Generate a Grounded Answer
Pass the reranked passages plus the question to your chosen large language model as context. Instruct the model to answer only from that context and to say so when the material does not answer the question. Returning source references alongside the answer builds trust and makes failures easy to debug.
Evaluate and Iterate
Once your Jina AI RAG pipeline works on happy-path questions, test it on edge cases and measure how often the retrieved passages actually contain the answer. Tune your chunk size, raise or lower the number of candidates, and experiment with reranking settings. Treat retrieval quality and generation quality as two separate problems, and fix them separately for the best results.
