Open-source embedding database that runs locally in a few lines of Python

Chroma is an open-source embedding database built to be dropped into a Python or JavaScript app with minimal setup. It stores vectors, documents and metadata in one place, runs locally by default, and offers a managed cloud for production. Free to self-host, with a paid cloud tier.

What is Chroma?

Chroma (the project, from Chroma Inc.) is a database whose whole job is to store embeddings and let you query them by similarity. The pitch is developer ergonomics: pip install chromadb, then create a client and a collection, and you are searching in minutes. It persists to disk by default and can run fully in-process for tests.

What features does Chroma offer?

  • Local-first: embed and query on your own machine with no server required, ideal for prototypes.
  • Metadata filtering: filter by key-value metadata alongside vector search.
  • Multiple clients: Python, JavaScript and a REST server for cross-language use.
  • Document store: keeps original text next to vectors, so you do not manage two systems.
  • Cloud option: a managed service for teams that do not want to run their own.

Chroma highlights

  • Apache 2.0 license; self-hosting is free with no page or vector caps.
  • Zero-config start makes it the default choice in many RAG tutorials.
  • Integrates with LangChain, LlamaIndex and OpenAI SDKs.

What can you build with Chroma?

  • A local RAG assistant over your notes and PDFs.
  • Semantic search for a small-to-mid document set.
  • Rapid prototyping before migrating to a larger vector database.
  • Test suites that need a throwaway vector store per run.
  • Recommendation demos using text embeddings.

It is aimed at developers who value speed of setup over raw scale. For billions of vectors with heavy multi-tenancy, a server-first system like Weaviate or Milvus handles that better. Chroma’s local mode is not built for high-concurrency production, so plan a migration path if your data grows.

Quick Summary

  • Chroma is an open-source embedding database for AI applications.
  • It runs locally with pip install chromadb and persists to disk.
  • Metadata filtering and a REST server are included.
  • Self-hosting is free under Apache 2.0; cloud is a paid option.
  • Best for prototyping; migrate for very large scale.
