Confluence Freemium

Atlassian wiki with Atlassian Intelligence search and writing help

Confluence is Atlassian’s team wiki for specs, runbooks and meeting notes. Its AI features summarize long pages, answer questions using content across spaces, and draft or rewrite text directly in the editor.

What is Confluence?

A page tree per space, with nested pages, comments, labels and permissions. Engineering writes RFCs, support writes runbooks, HR writes policies. The value is proximity to Jira: linking a page to an epic is one keystroke.

Search is the friction point everyone complains about, and it’s exactly what the AI layer is trying to fix.

What does Confluence AI do?

  • Ask a question across spaces — returns an answer with linked source pages.
  • Page summaries — a short digest at the top of a 3,000-word doc.
  • Editor AI — rewrite, expand, change tone, generate a table from a prompt.
  • Meeting notes — auto-extract action items into tasks.

Atlassian Intelligence is included on paid plans rather than sold as a separate add-on, which is a meaningful difference from how Slack packages its AI.

How much does Confluence cost?

Free for up to 10 users with 2 GB storage. Standard is about $6.40/user/month annually, Premium around $11.55, Enterprise custom. AI features are included from Standard upward, though usage is subject to fair-use limits.

Prices stack with Jira. A 50-person org running Jira Standard plus Confluence Standard is looking at roughly $700/month total.

Product Highlights

  • Deep Jira linking: epics, sprints and issues embed as live macros.
  • Page versioning and diff view for review cycles.
  • Whiteboards and databases built in on newer plans.
  • Space-level permissions plus page restrictions.

Where it fits

  1. Engineering RFCs and architecture decision records.
  2. On-call runbooks linked to incident tickets.
  3. Product requirement docs with review status.
  4. HR policy pages with restricted spaces.
  5. Sprint retrospectives and release notes.

Honest downsides

Page sprawl. Nobody deletes anything, and stale docs outrank current ones in search. AI answers inherit that problem — it will cite a 2023 runbook if that’s what matched. Permissions inheritance across nested pages also trips people up during audits.

Teams without Jira should look at Notion or Slite first; Confluence’s advantage shrinks outside the Atlassian ecosystem.

Quick Summary

  • Confluence is Atlassian’s wiki for specs, runbooks and team documentation.
  • Atlassian Intelligence is bundled on paid plans and answers questions across spaces with citations.
  • Free covers 10 users with 2 GB; Standard is about $6.40/user/month annually.
  • Main weakness is stale-content sprawl; best value for teams already on Jira.
