Lucid Freemium

Diagramming suite where AI drafts the flowchart and links live to your data

Lucid is the company behind Lucidchart (diagramming) and Lucidspark (whiteboarding). Its AI features draft flowcharts from a text prompt or a pasted document, and data-linked shapes refresh from a Google Sheet or Salesforce. The free tier allows three editable documents.

What is Lucid?

Two products under one account. Lucidchart is for precise diagrams — architecture, org charts, process flows — with proper connectors and alignment that a whiteboard can’t match. Lucidspark is the loose brainstorming board for when you don’t yet know the shape of the thing.

Lucid was previously called Lucid Software; the rebrand to Lucid happened as the suite expanded.

Lucid product features

  • AI diagram generation. Paste a process description or a Jira ticket and Lucid drafts a starting diagram with shaped, connected boxes. It’s a first draft — expect to redraw about a third of it.
  • Data linking. Import a Sheet or CSV, map columns to shape fields, and the diagram updates when the data changes. Useful for capacity maps and org charts.
  • Standard shape libraries. AWS, Azure, GCP, Kubernetes, UML, BPMN and Cisco sets are included rather than sold as add-ons.
  • Team libraries and templates. Shared shape libraries enforce a house style across teams.
  • Real-time collaboration. Multiplayer editing in the browser, plus comments and version history.

Product highlights

  • Diagram quality is high: automatic alignment and smart connectors produce export-ready output.
  • Data-linked diagrams stay accurate between meetings, which hand-drawn flows never do.
  • Integrates with Slack, Jira, Confluence and Google Workspace for embedding and reference.

What is Lucid used for?

  • Cloud architecture diagrams before a migration.
  • Process maps for operations and compliance documentation.
  • Org charts that update from an HR spreadsheet.
  • User journey maps during product discovery.
  • Workshop whiteboarding where sticky notes later become a structured flow.

Is Lucid free, and what does it cost?

Free gives three editable documents with core shapes and basic AI credits. Individual plans run around $9–$10 per user monthly billed yearly, Team plans sit near $9–$15 depending on tier, and Enterprise requires a quote. AI features and data linking are gated to higher tiers, which is the usual complaint.

Skip it if you only need an occasional flowchart — Excalidraw or draw.io covers that for free. The three-document cap on the free tier is low enough that anyone with real work hits it in a week. Also, exporting large data-linked diagrams to PowerPoint tends to break the layout, so plan to share web links instead.

Quick Summary

  • Lucid makes Lucidchart for diagramming and Lucidspark for whiteboarding.
  • The free plan limits you to three editable documents.
  • AI generates first-draft diagrams from a prompt or document; data-linked shapes update from spreadsheets.
  • Best for teams producing architecture and process diagrams regularly; overkill for one-off sketches.
