Basecamp Paid

Flat-fee project management with a calm, opinionated design

Basecamp is a project management tool that charges one flat fee — $299 per month — for unlimited users and unlimited projects. It bundles message boards, to-do lists, schedules, docs and file storage, and deliberately ships almost no AI features.

What is Basecamp?

Every project starts with the same six tools: Campfire chat, Message Board, To-dos, Schedule, Docs & Files, and automatic Check-ins. No boards to configure, no custom fields, no plugin marketplace.

That’s the whole pitch. Less setup, fewer dashboards, fewer arguments about process. Basecamp has been running under this philosophy since 2004 and the interface today would still be recognizable to someone from 2010.

Does Basecamp have AI features?

Essentially no. There’s no AI assistant, no note summaries, no generated to-dos. The company position is that AI features add noise to a product built to reduce it. If AI tooling is a hard requirement for your procurement checklist, this fails immediately.

Plenty of teams pair Basecamp with a separate chatbot and don’t miss it. Others find the gap unworkable.

How does Basecamp pricing work?

$299/month flat, billed monthly or yearly, unlimited users and projects. There’s a free tier for teachers and students, plus a 30-day trial. No per-seat math, no upgrade tiers, no enterprise sales call.

Do the arithmetic before assuming it’s expensive: a 25-person team on a $12/seat competitor pays $300/month anyway. Below roughly 20 people, Basecamp is the pricier option.

Product Highlights

  • Automatic Check-ins ask each person the same question on a schedule.
  • Hill Charts for showing what’s actually in progress versus stuck.
  • Client access without extra cost, with a simplified view.
  • Native iOS and Android apps; email-in for updates.

Where it works

  1. Agencies running client projects with freelancers who rotate in and out.
  2. Studios that want weekly check-in prompts without a standup meeting.
  3. Nonprofits with many part-time volunteers and a fixed budget.
  4. Small companies tired of configuring Jira.
  5. Client-facing project spaces where you don’t want a per-seat bill.

Where it doesn’t fit

No Gantt charts, no dependencies, no resource allocation, no burndown. Product teams tracking sprints will be frustrated within a week. There’s also no real reporting — you get project activity, not metrics.

And the flat fee cuts both ways: if your team shrinks, you keep paying $299. No downgrade path exists.

Quick Summary

  • Basecamp is a project management tool with a flat $299/month fee for unlimited users.
  • Each project has message boards, to-dos, schedules, docs and check-ins.
  • It ships essentially no AI features by design.
  • Best for agencies and 20+ person teams needing simple client-facing projects; wrong for sprint planning.
