Enterprise RAG platform focused on grounded, attributable answers over private data

Contextual AI is an enterprise RAG platform. It indexes a company’s documents and returns answers with inline citations, so a user can click through to the source passage. It targets regulated and document-heavy businesses, and pricing is quote-based rather than self-serve.

What problem does Contextual AI solve?

Hallucination in high-stakes settings. The company was founded in 2023 by Douwe Kiela, a co-author of the original RAG paper, and the product is built around a component they call the Grounded Language Model, which is designed to restrict generation to retrieved evidence.

It deploys in a customer’s own cloud — AWS, Azure or GCP — or via their managed service, which is the usual requirement for banks, insurers and law firms that cannot send data to a third-party API.

Product Features

  • Grounded generation that constrains output to retrieved chunks and flags low-confidence answers.
  • Instruction-following retrievers where you describe what you want in plain language and the retriever adapts.
  • Citations on every claim with page-level links back to the source file.
  • Enterprise deployment inside the customer’s VPC, with SOC 2 and HIPAA alignment.
  • Evaluations suite to measure groundedness, recall and citation accuracy before rollout.
  • Connectors for SharePoint, Confluence, Google Drive, S3 and common ticketing tools.

Product Highlights

The evaluation tooling is the most useful part. Most RAG failures are silent — the answer looks fine and is subtly wrong. Being able to run a groundedness eval on your own question set before launch is what separates this from a weekend LangChain build.

Second, citations are page-accurate, not paragraph-vague. For an audit or a legal review that difference is the whole game.

Downside: cost and friction. There is no public price list, onboarding involves a sales cycle, and self-hosting means you own the GPU bill. A four-person startup should not be here. For a team that can already run Kubernetes, the operational load is more than the marketing implies.

Use Cases

  • Insurance claims teams searching policy language with citations.
  • Law firms querying contract databases.
  • Banks answering compliance questions over internal policy manuals.
  • Pharma research groups searching regulated documentation.
  • Enterprise IT running a self-hosted Q&A layer over SharePoint.
