Enterprise AI platform that builds knowledge apps and agents on your company's own content

Writer is an enterprise AI platform for building knowledge assistants and workflow agents grounded in your company’s own documents, with a proprietary model family called Palmyra. It sells to IT and operations teams at large companies, not to individuals.

What is Writer?

Writer was founded in 2020 and originally pitched itself as an AI writing assistant. It has since repositioned around enterprise deployments: connect data sources, define guardrails, and publish internal assistants with role-based access. Customers include large financial and healthcare organizations, and the sales process reflects that.

There is a self-serve tier now, but the product’s real shape shows up in the enterprise contracts with security review, SSO, and a data residency requirement.

Product Features

  • Palmyra models plus support for bringing your own model from OpenAI, Anthropic, or open-weight options.
  • Knowledge graph connectors for Confluence, SharePoint, Google Drive, Salesforce, and Snowflake.
  • Agent builder with tool calling, approval steps, and scheduled runs.
  • Guardrails for content policy, PII redaction, and citation enforcement on answers.
  • Admin console with usage analytics per team and cost tracking across models.
  • Audit trail covering every generated response and the sources it cited.

Product Highlights

Citations are enforced, not suggested. Answers that cannot be grounded in an indexed source get flagged or blocked depending on settings. That is the single most useful feature for compliance-heavy teams.

The writing features feel dated. If all you want is a grammar and rewrite assistant, the old Writer product is now the weak part of the suite, and cheaper tools do it better.

Implementation is a project. Connectors work, but tuning retrieval for a messy SharePoint estate took weeks in the deployments we reviewed. Budget internal time, not just license fees.

Use Cases

  • Internal knowledge assistants that answer policy questions with citations.
  • Compliance teams drafting controlled documents from approved templates.
  • Customer support agents pulling from product documentation with guardrails.
  • Financial analysts generating summaries from indexed filings and internal research.
  • IT service desks automating ticket triage against runbooks.

How much does Writer cost?

The Team plan starts around $18 per user per month for basic writing features. Knowledge and agent capabilities sit in enterprise tiers that are quote-based and typically land in the tens of thousands per year, depending on seats and connectors.

Small teams should look at lighter RAG tools first. Writer starts making sense when governance, audit, and multi-source retrieval become procurement requirements.

Quick Summary

  • Writer is an enterprise AI platform for knowledge assistants and agents, built on its Palmyra models and bring-your-own-model support.
  • It connects to Confluence, SharePoint, Google Drive, Salesforce, and Snowflake.
  • List pricing starts near $18 per user per month; full knowledge and agent tiers are quote-based.
  • Best for regulated enterprises that need citations, PII redaction, and audit trails.
  • Not a replacement for a plain writing assistant, and implementation takes weeks of internal effort.
