Firebase Studio Freemium

Firebase Studio is Google's free cloud IDE where Gemini agents build full-stack apps

Firebase Studio is a free browser-based development workspace from Google where AI agents build apps. You describe what you want, a Gemini agent scaffolds the code, and you preview it live and deploy to Firebase — all from a browser tab, no local install.

What is Firebase Studio?

Firebase Studio launched in April 2025, replacing Project IDX. It’s a cloud IDE with a Linux VM per workspace, full terminal access, and Gemini agents embedded through the editor. It supports over a dozen language and framework templates, from React and Next.js to Flutter, Go and Python.

The difference from Replit is the deployment target: Firebase Studio ships to Google Cloud, and it’s built for teams already using Firebase Auth, Firestore or Cloud Functions.

Firebase Studio Features

  • Agent mode — App Prototyping agent turns a description, screenshot or even a drawing into a working app.
  • Agentic chat in the editor — ask for changes in natural language and watch the code update.
  • Cloud VM workspaces — up to 4 vCPU and 16GB RAM per environment.
  • Live preview and emulators — Firebase emulators for Auth, Firestore and Cloud Functions built in.
  • Gemini Code Assist — inline completion and code explanation across the workspace.
  • One-click publish — push to Firebase App Hosting with a public URL.
  • How Much Does Firebase Studio Cost?

Firebase Studio itself is free during preview, with generous workspace allowances — Google quotes up to 3 workspaces per user on the free tier. You pay only for what you deploy: Firebase Hosting, Firestore reads and Cloud Functions usage follow normal Google Cloud pricing. Gemini Code Assist for individuals is free with limits; enterprise licences start around $19 per user per month.

What Is Firebase Studio Good At?

  • Firebase-native apps — auth plus Firestore plus hosting in one workspace.
  • Screen-to-app — uploading a mockup and getting a functional frontend.
  • Chromebook and tablet dev — full toolchain without local hardware.
  • Prototyping sprints — test five variations in the time one would normally take.
  • Onboarding — new team members get a configured environment with zero setup.
  • Who Should Use Firebase Studio and Who Should Not

Strongest fit: developers shipping on Google Cloud, and teams that want browser-only workspaces without Replit’s credit anxiety. The free tier is unusually usable.

If you’re on AWS or Azure, the Firebase integrations are dead weight and you’d be better with Cursor or Codex CLI. The agent is also less autonomous than Replit’s — it works in shorter bursts and expects more steering, which is safer but slower.

Watch the preview status. Features and workspace quotas have shifted during 2025, so don’t architect a production plan around a free allowance that Google hasn’t committed to yet.

    Quick Summary

  • Firebase Studio is Google’s free browser-based AI development workspace, launched April 2025 as the successor to Project IDX.
  • Gemini agents scaffold apps from prompts, screenshots or drawings.
  • Workspaces run on cloud VMs with up to 4 vCPU and 16GB RAM.
  • Deploying to Firebase follows standard Google Cloud pricing.
  • Best fit is Firebase and Google Cloud users; the agent is less autonomous than Replit Agent 3.
