Mixpanel Freemium

Product analytics that answers funnels and retention questions without a data team.

Mixpanel is a product analytics platform that tracks user events — signup, export, upgrade — and turns them into funnels, retention curves and cohort reports. The free plan includes 1 million events per month, and paid Growth plans start around $28/month.

What is Mixpanel?

Mixpanel launched in 2009 as a mobile analytics SDK and has outlived most of its cohort. It is used by companies like Uber, Yelp and Notion-scale SaaS teams. The core object is an event with properties, not a pageview, so you can ask “how many workspace owners exported a report twice in their first week” and get an answer without writing SQL.

That said, a badly named event schema will haunt you for years. Naming discipline matters more than the tool.

Product Features

  • Funnels with breakdown by any property, and step-level conversion plus time-between-steps.
  • Retention reports using N-day, unbounded or custom return windows.
  • Cohorts you can save and reuse across reports, including behavioral cohorts (“did X but never did Y”).
  • Session Replay and heatmaps, added with the 2021 acquisition of Refresh; on Growth and above.
  • Experiments for feature-flag based A/B tests, plus Impact analysis for released features.
  • Warehouse connectors to sync events out to BigQuery, Snowflake or Redshift, included on Enterprise.

Product Highlights

  • The free tier is usable for real, not a demo shell. 1M events a month covers roughly 10,000 monthly active users with typical event volume.
  • Governance features (lexicon, event approval, data cleanup) are locked behind Growth, which is where teams usually get hit by the upgrade.
  • Query latency on large reports is noticeable — a year-long retention report across 20M events can take 30+ seconds.
  • It is not a warehouse replacement. If finance already runs numbers in BigQuery, Mixpanel becomes a second source of truth unless you sync.

Who is Mixpanel for?

Product managers at self-serve or PLG SaaS companies who need self-serve answers on activation and retention. Also mobile app teams who want funnels without building an in-house analytics pipeline.

Poor fit for pure marketing sites — you’ll be paying for event tooling to measure pageviews. And for teams with strict data-residency needs in China or the EU, self-hosting is not an option.

Pricing in 2026

Free: 1M events/month, 5 saved reports, no session replay. Growth: from $28/month with unlimited reports, 100M events included at higher tiers. Enterprise is custom and adds SSO, roles, and warehouse export. Events beyond the plan are billed per 100K, and overages are not automatically capped.

Use Cases

  1. Finding which onboarding step loses the most users in a five-step signup flow.
  2. Measuring week-1 retention for users who invited a teammate versus those who did not.
  3. Comparing conversion on a new pricing page with a 50/50 experiment.
  4. Building a behavioral cohort of users who hit an error and never returned, then exporting it for support outreach.
  5. Syncing product events to Snowflake so the data team joins them with billing records.

Quick Summary

  • Mixpanel is event-based product analytics; the free plan covers 1 million events per month and Growth starts at $28/month.
  • Its core reports are funnels, retention curves and behavioral cohorts, all without SQL.
  • Session replay and data governance features require the Growth tier or higher.
  • Best for PLG SaaS and mobile product teams; a poor fit for marketing-only sites or strict data-residency requirements.
