Vercel Freemium

Frontend cloud for deploying AI apps with preview URLs and edge functions

Vercel is a cloud platform for shipping frontend and full-stack apps, best known as the company behind Next.js. You connect a Git repo and every push gets a live preview URL. The Hobby tier is free for personal projects; Pro is $20 per user per month.

What is Vercel used for?

It hosts web apps and APIs with almost no server work. Push code, and Vercel builds, deploys and serves it on a global CDN with HTTPS. For AI apps it also ships the AI SDK, which wraps model calls from OpenAI, Anthropic and others behind one API.

Product Features

  • Git deploys: connect GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket and each commit gets its own preview URL.
  • Edge Functions: run code close to users in dozens of regions for low latency.
  • AI SDK: an open-source library for streaming model responses across providers.
  • Fluid Compute: newer execution model that reuses warm instances to cut cold starts.
  • Analytics and Speed Insights: real-user performance data, free on Hobby with sampling limits.
  • v0: a separate AI tool from Vercel that generates React UI from a prompt.

Product Highlights

  • Free Hobby tier caps you at 100 GB bandwidth and 100 GB-hours of function time per month.
  • Pro costs $20/user/month and adds more bandwidth, team features and password-protected previews.
  • Bandwidth overages are the classic surprise bill — a viral page can push you into paid usage.
  • Deep Next.js integration, but other frameworks work with a bit more config.

Is the free plan enough?

For a portfolio, side project or low-traffic SaaS, yes. Hobby supports custom domains and serverless functions. Once you have paying users, real traffic or need a team, move to Pro. Heavy AI workloads with long-running jobs may fit better on a platform that bills by compute time rather than invocation.

Use Cases

  • Deploying a Next.js marketing site with per-branch preview URLs.
  • Hosting an AI chat app that streams responses from several model providers.
  • Running an API route that calls a model and returns JSON.
  • Shipping a landing page for a product launch in an hour.
  • Giving designers preview links they can click without a local setup.

Quick Summary

  • Vercel is a frontend cloud from the makers of Next.js.
  • The free Hobby tier suits personal projects; Pro is $20/user/month.
  • Its AI SDK simplifies calling multiple model providers from one codebase.
  • Watch bandwidth limits — overages are the most common cost complaint.
