How to Use Canva Magic Studio for Product Mockups Fast
Canva Magic Studio makes a usable product mockup in about 8 minutes: remove the background, place the product on a generated scene, extend the canvas to the right aspect ratio, and add a text block. The output suits social and web, not print catalogues — resolution and edge detail fall apart at large sizes.
Magic Studio features are included on Pro; Free accounts get a small monthly AI allowance and lose access to several tools after the trial.
What’s actually inside Magic Studio?
Four tools do the mockup work: Background Remover (one click, decent on clean product shots), Magic Expand (generative fill outside the frame), Magic Grab (turns a subject into a movable layer), and Magic Write for copy. There’s also Magic Media for generating images outright from a prompt.
Magic Grab is the one people overlook. It lets you pull a product out of a photo and re-compose it without re-shooting.
Step 1: Start from the best-lit photo you already have
Background removal is only as good as the source. A shot with soft, even light and a plain background gives clean edges; a phone photo against a busy desk produces halos around handles, and no amount of AI fixes that without manual cleanup.
If you have to choose between a sharp ugly photo and a soft pretty one, take the sharp one. Sharpness survives; softness becomes mush after upscaling.
Step 2: Remove the background and check the edges
Open the image in Canva, click Edit photo > Background Remover. Then zoom to 300% and inspect the silhouette, especially around thin parts — cables, handles, hair, glass rims.
Use the eraser and restore brushes to fix the three or four spots it always gets wrong. This two-minute step is the difference between “AI mockup” and “mockup”.
Step 3: Build the scene, then place the product
Create a blank design at your output size. Two routes:
- Generate the background with Magic Media. Prompt it like a photo brief: “matte grey concrete surface, soft window light from the left, shallow depth of field, no text, no people”. Empty scenes prompt better than busy ones.
- Use a stock photo from Canva’s library as the backdrop and blur it slightly so it reads as a background rather than a competing subject.
Then drop the cut-out product in and match its light direction to the scene’s. A product lit from the right on a scene lit from the left looks fake regardless of how clean the cutout is.
Step 4: Expand to the other aspect ratios with Magic Expand
One scene, three crops, one purchase. Use Magic Expand to push a 1080×1080 square out to 1080×1920 for stories. It invents the extra surface — usually seamlessly on plain textures, less well on anything with a pattern or text.
Do the wide expansion once and crop down, rather than expanding separately for each ratio. Consistency across placements matters more than pixel-perfect framing.
How many AI credits does a mockup cost?
Canva Pro includes a monthly AI allowance, and heavy Magic Media generation burns it fast. A typical mockup: one background removal, 2-4 Magic Media generations to get a usable background, one Magic Expand. That’s roughly half a dozen actions per final image.
For 20 product images a month, plan on a Pro plan plus careful re-generation — batch your prompts, generate three candidates at once, and pick. Re-rolling one prompt twelve times is how teams hit limits mid-campaign.
Where Magic Studio still falls short
Scale accuracy. Magic Expand doesn’t know a mug is 9cm tall, so a product placed in a scene can look wrong next to a human hand. Reflections and shadows are also generated approximately — Magic Studio won’t produce a believable product reflection on a glossy surface.
Packaging with fine print is another failure: text on labels gets distorted or invented. For anything where the label must be readable and correct, shoot it.
Who should use this flow?
E-commerce sellers pushing social ads, Etsy and Shopify stores needing 20 variants fast, and marketers testing creative angles. Not appropriate for catalogue photography, print, or anything where the product’s proportions are the selling point.
