Switching code editors feels daunting — you’ve spent years configuring VS Code with the perfect extensions, keybindings, and themes. The good news is that Cursor…
Anthropic's mid-tier model that beat its own flagship on coding and writing
Claude 3.5 Sonnet is Anthropic’s mid-tier model, released in June 2024 and updated in October. It has a 200K token context window, scores strongly on coding and writing, and costs $3 per million input tokens. An experimental computer-use API lets it control a desktop.
Claude 3.5 Sonnet sits in the middle of Anthropic’s model line, between Haiku and Opus. When it launched it outperformed the larger Claude 3 Opus on most benchmarks at roughly a fifth of the price, which was unusual at the time and made it Anthropic’s de facto default.
The October 2024 revision added an Artifacts window for live code preview and, more interestingly, a computer-use capability that lets the model move a cursor, click and type.
Developers who want strong code generation without GPT-4-class prices are the obvious audience. Writers also tend to prefer its register: it produces fewer of the stock phrases that make ChatGPT output obvious.
Two caveats. It is now a generation behind Claude 4 models, so check pricing before starting new work, and the computer-use API is slow and error-prone, fine for research demos, not for unattended production.
