Qwen2.5-Max Freemium

Alibaba's flagship MoE model, trained on over 20 trillion tokens

Qwen2.5-Max is the flagship model from Alibaba’s Qwen team, released in January 2025. It is a mixture-of-experts model trained on more than 20 trillion tokens, free to use on Qwen Chat, and around $1.60 per million input tokens through Alibaba Cloud’s API.

What is Qwen2.5-Max?

Qwen2.5-Max is the largest model in the Qwen2.5 line. Alibaba trained it on a mix of web text, code and curated data, then refined it with reinforcement learning from human feedback plus a second stage of preference tuning aimed at reducing the blandness that plagues most tuned assistants.

It competes directly with DeepSeek V3, GPT-4o and Claude 3.5 Sonnet, and Alibaba’s published benchmarks put it ahead of DeepSeek V3 on several coding and instruction-following tasks while using fewer active parameters.

What does Qwen2.5-Max offer?

  • Large MoE architecture. High capacity with a smaller active parameter count, which keeps inference cost down.
  • Multilingual reach. Solid performance across Chinese, English, and 27 other languages.
  • Coding. Strong on Python, JavaScript and SQL generation, with a separate Coder variant available.
  • Tool use. Function calling and structured output for agent pipelines.
  • Long input. The Qwen2.5 family supports up to 128K tokens on several variants.
  • Open siblings. Smaller Qwen2.5 weights are open, so you can self-host a cousin of the Max model.

Product Highlights

  • Price. Around $1.60 per million input tokens, cheaper than GPT-4o and Claude 3.5 Sonnet.
  • Free chat. Qwen Chat offers the Max model without a card, with generous daily limits.
  • Open ecosystem. Qwen releases open weights frequently, which keeps the family easy to test locally.
  • Tooling. Integrations exist for Ollama, vLLM, and most Chinese and Western cloud platforms.

Who is Qwen2.5-Max for?

Teams building for Chinese and English audiences at once get the most out of it, since bilingual quality is unusually balanced. The cheap API also makes it a reasonable drop-in for high-volume classification and extraction jobs.

The limitations are practical. Alibaba Cloud hosts the API, which brings the same data-residency questions as any China-hosted service. Documentation and community support are thinner in English than for OpenAI or Anthropic equivalents, and the Max model itself is closed, so you cannot self-host the exact thing you benchmarked.

Use Cases

  • Bilingual Chinese-English content generation
  • Bulk data extraction and classification at low cost
  • Code generation for web and data stacks
  • Building multilingual support bots
  • Prototyping agents with cheap function calling

Quick Summary

  • Qwen2.5-Max is Alibaba’s flagship MoE model, trained on over 20T tokens.
  • It is free on Qwen Chat and about $1.60 per million input tokens via API.
  • Bilingual Chinese-English quality is a genuine strength.
  • The API is China-hosted and the Max weights are not open.
  • Best for cost-sensitive, multilingual, high-volume workloads.
