How to Compare Grok 4 vs GPT and Claude for Real Work

xAI's frontier model with live X data and a Think mode for hard problems
Grok 3 is xAI’s flagship large language model, launched in February 2025. It has a Think mode for step-by-step reasoning, DeepSearch for research, and real-time access to posts on X. It is free with limits for X users and available through SuperGrok or the xAI API.
Grok 3 is the third generation of the chatbot built by xAI, Elon Musk’s AI company. xAI trained it on Colossus, a data centre that reached roughly 200,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs, and claims it took about 200 million GPU-hours of compute.
The model ships in two main variants: Grok 3 for speed and Grok 3 mini for cheaper reasoning. A Think button adds deliberate reasoning, and a Big Brain mode spends more compute on tougher questions.
Grok 3 is worth it if your work depends on what is happening on X right now: social monitoring, breaking-news summaries, sentiment tracking. The tone is looser than ChatGPT or Claude, which some users like and others find gimmicky.
Two honest limitations. The free tier limits are aggressive, and you hit them fast on Think mode. And outside X-centric tasks, Grok 3 does not clearly beat Gemini 2.5 Pro or GPT-4o on general reasoning, so switching just for benchmarks is not a strong case.
