Open-source platform that turns natural-language questions into SQL across your databases

MindsDB is an open-source AI data platform that adds a natural-language layer over your existing databases, so a question typed in English comes back as a SQL result from Postgres, MySQL or Snowflake. The community edition is free; cloud plans are paid.

What is MindsDB?

It started in 2017 as an in-database machine learning project — train a model directly on a table without exporting data. In 2023 it repositioned around LLM access. The current product is best understood as a middleware layer: you connect your data sources, and MindsDB exposes them through a single SQL dialect with AI functions mixed in.

The practical appeal is that your analyst doesn’t learn a new BI tool. They write SELECT question_answer FROM mindsdb.llm WHERE question = 'top churn drivers last quarter' and get rows back.

Product Features

  • 200+ data source connectors — Postgres, MySQL, Snowflake, BigQuery, MongoDB, S3 parquet files and more.
  • AI SQL functions: embeddings, sentiment, text summarization callable inline in a query.
  • Knowledge bases for RAG over internal documents, queryable with SQL.
  • Jobs and pipelines to schedule model refresh or embedding updates.
  • Self-hosting via Docker or Kubernetes, which matters for teams that can’t ship data to a SaaS.

Is MindsDB free?

p>The open-source edition is free and self-hosted, with no query limits beyond your own infrastructure. MindsDB Cloud has a free tier with limited managed instances and short-lived environments, then paid tiers based on instance size and usage. Enterprise pricing is quoted.

LLM calls through MindsDB still bill to your OpenAI or Anthropic key, so the token cost is yours either way.

Where it gets hard

This is developer infrastructure, not a chat-with-your-data product. There’s no polished dashboard, and the docs assume you know SQL and Docker. Natural-language-to-SQL accuracy on a schema with 80 tables and bad naming is mediocre — garbage column names produce garbage joins. Expect to invest a week before it pays off.

Use Cases

  • Analysts querying three separate warehouses without writing ETL first.
  • Adding sentiment scoring to support tickets stored in Postgres.
  • Self-hosted document Q&A for a company that bans SaaS data transfer.
  • Forecasting churn on transactional tables using built-in model training.
  • Scheduled enrichment jobs that tag new records with an LLM nightly.

Quick Summary

  • MindsDB is an open-source AI data platform with a natural-language SQL layer over 200+ sources.
  • The community edition is free and self-hosted; cloud tiers are paid.
  • Best for engineering teams comfortable with SQL and Docker, not business users.
  • Accuracy depends heavily on schema quality — messy table names break the NL-to-SQL layer.
